From Helsinki Times:
REBELLION echoes with “punk”, whilst “steam” brings back the odour of Sherlock Holmes’ London. Combined, steampunk is about industrial revolution and counterculture in the Age of Steam, the Victorian era…[Click here to read the full story]
Trellia’s comment: Yet another article about Steampunk, this time from Finland. Even Hot Topic’s started selling cog-shaped earrings – it seems that, at long last, Steampunk has finally punched through into the more mainstream end of alternative culture.
And… this is a style I can ware at work. I work for a fortune 100 company. I love the style and it would seem my boss does as well!!
Oh, God–it’s the Steampunk apocalpyse…!
It always happens, eventually. Although I find the Hot Topic thing somewhat disturbing, I can’t actually say it’s as bad as some things they’ve exploited. I’ll worry when it hits Target and Walmart.
There really is no need to worry . Just embrace it. This has been in the air for years. There are a number of women in the 40’s 50’s and 60’s who wear this type of clothing in an upscale more vanilla flavor. The clothing of Krista Larson is clearly influenced by the clothing of the 1880s and pieces by Ivey Abitz, and even Jeanne Engelhart’s Angelheart /Flax line have had a neo victorian /edwardian influence for years. Most of us wear Fluevogs, Cydwoqs, and Giraudon shoes and boots with our clothing. I have worn bowlers, mad hatters and top hats so long folks dont recognize me without them. It is a mentality that transcends age and influence. Even if Target does begin to sell pieces that are influenced by the style they will never put it all together quite like you.
I would very much like steampunk-esque clothing/accesories for someone I know – can’t find those earrings on hottopic though..help?
