Parents Launch Website Protesting Against ‘Suicidal’ Emo Music

From Gigwise:

“Gigwise has been informed about a website set up by parents who are worried about what they perceive as the ‘glorification of self-injury and suicide’ in emo music….” [Click here to read the full story]

The website in question can be viewed at http://whatisemo.bravehost.com/index.html

Trellia’s comment: As suspected, emo is quickly being demonised and feared, thanks to that Daily Mail article.  It’s the whole “let’s blame the music” mentality that we saw surrounding such other tragedies as the Columbine massacre.  I just cannot believe that music or fashion alone can drive a person to suicide.  It defies all logic.

How very ignorant. Like you said a few posts ago, what of the teens who feel a sense of belonging in the Emo sub-culture? People just dismiss it as a suicide cult just because a stupid article tells them it is…ugh.

I went on the page, and it’s lame. The parents have no idea what emo actually they’re just going by what the think it is and what they think, is completely off target! The person who made it is all blah blah blah I’m a mental health professional, but hat doesn’t mean to say you now everything about every kind of culture!! GRR!! Going on that website just made me angry. I think they should shut it down.

Wow! That site is perfectly right! I saw all the pictures that the emo kids post on line. NO CUTTING OR SUICIDE REFERENCES THERE.. NOT A BIT!!!!! Then is looked at the forums and saw all the threats and talk about cutting. NOPE NO REFERENCES TO CUTTING AND SUICIDE THERE EITHER!!!! Of course, I’ll go back to school in the fall. I’ll see the same kids that call themselves emo and show off the cuts on their arms. NOPE THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN CAUSE EMO IS NOT ABOUT CUTTING OR SUICIDE!!! NOW WAY!!! NOT A BIT!!!!!

Who are you people trying to fool? Don’t you realize that there are people that see this going on EVERY DAY!!! Why do you think there are more and more attacks on emo? IT BECAUSE IT”S TRUE AND PEOPLE SEE IT WITH THEIR OWN EYES!! IT’S NOT A STEREOTYPE IF IT REALLY IS HAPPENING!!!

Do you seriously think that there are no emo kids out there cutting? Are there no emo kids showing off their cuts because they have to “show their pain” to be a “real emo?” I heard them saying that. I know about 15 of them at my school. Are you going to tell me that I’m not seeing that? Are you going to say that all of the pictures on that site are faked when most of then can be seen on emo-corner or emobucket?

I find it very amusing that you people keep wanting that site taken down. Does it show things that the rest of you don’t want the world to see? Too many “inconvenient truths” there? Too many verifiable facts. In verifiable, I mean that it points to cutting and suicide references that I saw and heard, that my friends see and hear. I sure the teacher and other school staff know about it too. I guess thats the point then. You don’t want everyone putting it all together and seeing what emo is really doing to kids! In the end. You people can deny all you want, you can protest empty buildings all you want. You can make blog entries, websites, forums; whatever you want. You can never take away what me and probably millions of people SEE and HEAR on a regular basis.

I look forward to reading your smug denial of the reality that people can see for themselves.

What the hell? Don’t the parents ever think maybe there are more cutters in the emo sub-culture because they are more accepting, making the cutters come out of the closet.

  6. September 12, 2008 at 4:41 pm

As I suspected. You can’t answer. The evidence is too clear. In the end, so many will know about emo that it will fade. Also, some of Dr. Emo’s friends have made a site about MCR. http://mychemicalcult.co.cc/ They basically show what the MCRmy is saying on line. I guess they’ll have fun trying to unsay what they have already said.

they don;t understand that there are hapy christans emos and goths woh odn’t cut and worsihp Jesus and God.

  8. November 2, 2008 at 8:51 pm

Again, there is no reply to the claims made by Dr. Emo. Her site has been redone. Have you noticed how many school staff are visiting and posting in the forms? They’re talking about giving “suicide tests” to emo kids!! They’re talking about changing dress codes to ban emo!

Did you read that the term “emo” is the fourth most banned word by screening software? The site is working. The truth cannot be denied. Dr. Emo and others are bringing about the death of emo!

Keep on trying to deny it. You can’t make people deny what they have seen. Dr. Emos site is so successful because people can see what she is talking about. Emo is dying, we’re killing it, and there isn’t a thing we can do about it!

Wow can’t believe no one has responded to “not a scene kid” … but ignoring idiots is a good idea. But I’m all for bad ideas.

    Dear Not A Scene Kid.

Do you not know that Emo is a genre of music? Emo is a subculture where kids hang out , and the guys act all emotional and deep so they can get the girl, but the girl notices he is too much of a wimp and dumps him, which then fuels his poetry and music. It’s a passionate music scene, not a cult. What you see are CUTTERS. there will ALWAYS BE CUTTERS. Before Emo was what it is now, there were still people cutting themselves. People sometimes don’t know how to properly deal with issues. AND HOW OLD ARE THESE CUTTERS YOU KNOW? I doubt past the age of 16. Anyone and everyone I have seen with cuts, have been 13-15, and by 15 were much happier people, who are living their lives, and their scars remind them not to dwell on the horrible things in life.

Let me tell you a story. I love warped tour, sure the emo bands REALLY get on my nerves, and the hardcore bands have so much anger and testosterone I fear getting punched in the face, but I’m there for the punk and ska. Well before a big band performed I thought I’d wait things out by checking out The Pink Spiders. In the crowd, right infront of me were a young bisexual female couple, and I had no problem with them. I had a problem with their cuts, all the way up their arms, it was the most ridiculous thing ever. They were VERY young, I was guessing 13. They don’t know anything about actual emo, and they dressed like they stole things from a mix of 50 cents wardrobe and a hot topic. These kids were not “emo kids” they were just kids, who cut themselves, and cutting is a problem. Cutting, cutters, self mutilation. Not emo. Not emo.

Lawl, that is the classic lie of the emos.

    How do you explain this?

    http://emodanger.co.cc/onlinepostings.htm

How do you explain that the emo kids themselves say that they are emo. Doesn’t quite fit with the “emo is a musical genre” fable. Let me guess, it “cutters” that dress like emos, listen to emo music, say that they’re emo, but they’re not really emo-because you say so? Only emos believe that idiocy. Anyway, it’s all fading now. Emo is on the way out. I do think it’s sites like “Dr. Emo’s” that have helped.

We never mentioned it before, but no I guess it really doesn’t matter. I was part of a group that emailed about 2000 schools in the US and warned them about emo. We received about 800-900 responses. And guess what, they agreed with Dr. Emo! Why, you ask? Because they SEE it with their own eyes! Before Dr. Emo had to take her last forum down, she has about three dozen teachers, guidance counselors, principals, and school board members posting. They were talking about doing suicide assessments, having ways for kids to turn in emo kids so they could be given psychological tests, and talking about banning emo!

So, go ahead and keep on lying about the whole thing. The reason that Dr. Emo got about 100000 hits (between the three sites), is that people can go to their local mall or walk down the hall at a school and see the emos that say that they’re emo, and wear scars on their arms.

Emo is about the most hated subculture of all time, and it’s about time that emo dies. BTW, we also heard from quite a few business people that say that they’ll NEVER hire a person with scars because of emo. Before you say, “they can’t do that!!” They’ll always give another reason. You people brought it on yourselves. You say that you just want to be left alone, but you act all dramatic, dress like clowns, and scar yourselves. Like that ISN’T going to draw attention to you.

Disgusting. Way to deflect blame from ‘normal’ kids with a ‘normal and healthy’ hobby of bullying anyone different and onto a culture that was probably their victim’s best means of coping and making friends who weren’t intolerant arseholes.

Personally, I think the site is at fault for blatantly offering unsupported statements as facts. It claims that more emo kids cut than others, but then BRIEFLY mentions that the author doesn’t have actual data. Using online images is a poor way to judge anything. If I, not being emo, made 1,000 icons about it an attempt to bash the fad, how would anyone know that it was one jerk instead of 1,000 emos? The stories I read sounded VERY fake. If they weren’t, I know they were the EXTREME minority. Having spoken to many emo kids and (college-aged) adults, I have never heard any of them mention self-harm as a theme. Having listened and looked up lyrics to some of the songs, I’ve found nothing that provides enough basis to warrant the site. What have I found out about emo? It lacks substance. There isn’t any real message or purpose to it, unlike goth, punk, or even steampunk. The most detailed explanation I’ve heard is that emo is about being emotional, and not conforming to typical masculine stereotypes. I guess that means the next thing we can wrongly blame emo for is homosexuality.

Now, let’s get one thing clear. There are teen suicides and self-harming. This means that parents need to actually BE parents and do some of the things the site does mention. Do things with your child, find out what your child’s listening to (not hard, since a lot of teens keep their headphones to MAX), meet the parents of your child’s friends, and if your son/daughter is at least 15, stop treating him/her like a little kid!

So, you fault the site for stating facts without research, because there has been none. You seem to be forgetting some things. Here’s quote from Dr. Emo’s site:

“There have been many comments on the original website regarding stereotyping and generalizing. I will point this out again (and it is written multiple times on this site). Not all “emo” kids cut, and not all kids that cut are “emo.” It has been my experience, however, that a large percentage of “emo” kids do cut, and it appears that this is a higher percentage than the general population. Again, there has been no research conducted in this matter. We only have anecdotal reports to rely on here. However, as the friends of the original site discovered, hundreds of other professionals have stated the same thing. They were able to communicate with professionals all over the US. They received hundreds of responses stating the same thing. Emos are cutting and attempting suicides in numbers that have never been previously seen.”

So, you took what you wanted, and ignored the rest. How do you explain all the schools that agreed?

Not only do you selectively state what Dr. Emo has said, you then make a statement that all of the images and stories were faked.

“If I, not being emo, made 1,000 icons about it an attempt to bash the fad, how would anyone know that it was one jerk instead of 1,000 emos?”

So, you selectively interpret Dr. Emo, accuse her of being disingenuous, then make an outlandish claim that everything was faked?

Everybody is going to believe that, aren’t they?

Your fail level keeps increasing! Covering it up fails, trying to change the subject fails! Making false accusations fails!

Give up and admit the truth!

that site is basically calling me my friends and many people i care about metally challenged freaks that should be locked in a room and observed tbh i do not know ONE emo who cuts themself you see that video on the site with the young girl? the people who convinced her to cut obv dont cut but were being mean and cruel and saying that emo`s do cut because she was into the fashion. DUH

  17. July 15, 2009 at 5:27 am

I want to add something. A lot of emos go to my school. Theres the young emos who are 11-14, the ones with the trying to hard to be dark and depressed attitude who worship MCR and other such bands like theyre God. They cut them selves not because they truly feel the need to, but because its part of the ‘fad.’ Ill own up to that, a lot of supposedly emo kids are like that. Not all emos are though. Thats what these people dont see, and what i feel you dont want to see. Jsut as well, I dont agree with cutting because it helps you fit in. Im a girl who cuts, and Im far from emo, with blond hair and green eyes, plus i like country, and I cant stand make up let alone thick eyeliner. Im pretty much anti emo, but I cut, and I have far better reasons for doing so

    christ right

firstly something which no one has picked up on is that Scene Kid, NOT or not a scene kid a global mod on the mcr hate website. so could i suggest that it wouldnt be such a large leap in logic to presume that there the same person?
secondly personly i think the majority of the emo music is a pile of poo but i have the right to say this due to free speech. As do other people who wish to voice there opinion in favor of it.
“you fault the site for stating facts without research, because there has been none.”
*epic facepalm* come on please if i set up a website saying that all rappers where out to convince kids to deal drugs and glamorising gangs…. hang on a sec….

“Thanks for this site. I was informed of it today. I’ll be discussing it with our youth ministry this weekend. It’s amazing how satan can use something that seems so harmless, and turn it into a subculture that seems designed to separate people from God. I’ll make this available to every parent in our church.
    Your brother in Christ,
John” just wtf anyone remember when if you played records backwards it was a messege to satan? or then the messeges became sublimnal? now is satans latist trick to convince kids to form cults to egg eachothere on to suicide?

fuck me why no just cut to the chase with the banning emo and get every other subcultre while your at it? shall we all walk around in montone jumpsuits singing prasis to the mighty overlord. listing to what we’re told eating what we’re told and shitting when we’re told

btw try and flame me for spelling grammer ect im just gonna save time and reply now
i did a shit yesterday so what?

The debate on whether Music causes social problems has been raging since music was invented. people will identify with whichever genre they want to. Trying to blame a type of music you dont like is just musical fascism. The choice is clear if you don’t like it don’t listen to it, and in short if you have nothing nice to say, simply shut up.

There id no need to argue with “Not” or whatever he calls himself he is clearly beyond having his opinion changed. S/He is in my humble opinion a hatemongering bigot who deserves nothing but comtempt.
